Problem Definition!

One of the challenges a Data Scientist will face on any Analytics project is getting a clear understanding of the problem they are trying to solve.

I love working with Data and generating insights from them. However, I will rather focus on using Data to solve a problem than playing around with data that is meaningless to the business (except I’m doing exploratory analysis). I cannot overemphasize the importance of clearly defining the problem.  Here are few questions that can help clarify the problem:

  • What is the pain-point we are trying to address?
  • What is the question we are trying to answer?
  • How do you plan to use the insight from the analysis
  • Who are the stakeholders in this project?
  • Who will benefit from this analysis?
  • Why is this project important?
  • Do we have the (quality) data we need to solve the problem?
